What’s his age again? How old is Ziggy Ansah?

Could one of the Lions top defenders be older than we thought?

According to multiple sources, there is new controversy in Allen Park – Ziggy Ansah may be older than he and the team have indicated.

Reports out of his native Ghana indicate that Ansah filed his documents to establish his new sports initiative foundation with a different- older– birth date. Paperwork out of Ghana says that Ansah may actually be 29 instead of the 27 the Lions believe he is. Now, this may be a simple error in the journalism coming out of Ghana, or a tremendous oversight on the part of the Same Ol’ Lions.

This could even be worse than the news that came out of AP where the All-Pro defensive end suggested he would take free agent advice from Ndamukong Suh. Suh who notoriously “didn’t have an agent” during his last season in Detroit and later left for Miami, may be the worst person Lions fans would want in Ansah’s ear.

The person who may lose most on this is Ansah himself. With him entering his last year under contract, the market for a defensive end is vastly different based on age. Calais Campbell, 29, signed a 4-year contract with the Jaguars worth $60 million ($30 million guaranteed), Whereas 27-year-old Muhammad Wilkerson signed a 5-year contract $86 million dollar contract with the Jets ($53.5m guaranteed).

In 2015, Ansah racked up 14.5 sacks as he quickly became known as one of the best edge rushers in the NFL. Unfortunately, he took a giant step back in 2016, picking up only two sacks and admittedly underachieving for his standards.

From Detroitlions.com:

“I take it personally,” Ansah said of Detroit’s low sack total a season ago. “I feel like I didn’t do my job. That is what I’m paid to do. So, like I said, I’m really focused this year and excited for what we have coming up and it’s definitely going to be better than last year.”

What do you think Nation?

  • Is this a big deal or no deal?
  • Is Bob Quinn leaking this information to get his star defensive end to sign for cheaper than the market value?
  • Is this a sign that the Lions will be players instead of being played for a change?
