After much speculation about where Google would land when they made the jump to downtown Detroit, the announcement came today that they had signed a lease for an office in the newly constructed District Detroit surrounding Little Caesars Arena.

Moving from their 17,000 square foot workspace in downtown Birmingham, Google’s new office space in the District Detroit, the name given to the roughly 50-block area surrounding Little Caesars Arena, will be roughly 29,000 square feet. Google is also now officially the first organization taking up office space in the District Detroit not affiliated with the Ilitches.
While there could obviously be room for new employment by local residents depending on the rate of turnover with current employees, and depending on any possible expansion by the location, the plan right now is for over 100 current employees of Google to move to the new office from their old Birmingham location. The co-site leads for the automotive advertising and tech support branch of Google, Danielle Russell and Guy Schueller, believe the move will be good for their branch, as well as the surrounding Detroit area.
“Our new space will not only provide room for future growth, but will also give us the opportunity to contribute to the dynamic economic and community activity happening in Detroit.”
Google’s relocation will be “the first of many new tenants expected to join The District Detroit in office, retail and residential developments,” Christopher Ilitch, president and CEO of Detroit-based Ilitch Holdings Inc., said in a statement.
Google is expected to make the move into the new office space in Spring 2018.
