Detroit Sports Nation – Fact-Checking & Corrections Policy
Last updated: May 2025
1. Purpose
Detroit Sports Nation exists to inform and entertain fans with accurate, Detroit-centric sports coverage. This fact-checking policy explains how we verify information before publication and how we correct the record when mistakes slip through.
2. Verification Standards
| Step | What We Do | Minimum Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Source hierarchy | Prioritize primary documents (press releases, court filings, official data) over aggregated reports. | At least one primary or two independent secondary sources for every factual claim. |
| Name & title check | Confirm spelling, team role, contract details. | Cross-reference official roster or LinkedIn profile. |
| Quote authentication | Attribute every quote to a dated press conference, broadcast, or direct interview. | Audio, video, or transcript on file. |
| Stat validation | Use MLB Statcast, NBA Stats, Hockey Reference, or official league feeds. | Link or footnote to stat source. |
Reporters record source URLs and timestamps in an internal “source sheet” that editors can audit at any time.
3. AI & Automation
We use AI language models to draft early outlines and generate headline ideas.
A human editor:
Verifies every number, quote, and statement against the source sheet.
Rewrites any AI-produced text that cannot be confirmed.
Adds the disclosure line: “Drafted with AI assistance and fact-checked by DSN staff.”
AI is never allowed to publish automatically.
4. Corrections & Updates
Minor edits (spelling, style) are made silently.
Factual errors trigger an update note at the bottom of the article:
Correction (May 20, 2025): An earlier version misstated Bryce Rainer’s exit velocity as 103 mph. The correct figure is 108 mph.
Reader alerts – If you spot an error, email [email protected] or DM us on X or Facebook. We aim to review every tip within 24 hours.
A weekly “Truth Audit” post lists material corrections made in the past seven days.
5. Attribution & Linking
Inline links direct readers to primary documents whenever possible.
We credit competing outlets by name and link when they break news we cannot confirm independently.
Anonymous sources are used only when the information is vital and unobtainable on-record; an editor must know the source’s identity.
6. Editorial Independence
Advertisers, sponsors, and affiliate partners do not influence our news judgments or fact-checking process. Sponsored posts are labeled “Sponsored” at the top and are subject to the same accuracy checks as all DSN content.
