When it was announced that Ron Gardenhire had been named the next manager of the Detroit Tigers, general manager Al Avila was able to check off the No. 1 offseason task on his list.

Now, the next logical progression is for Gardenhire to pick out his staff, including who he wants as the pitching coach and that could happen soon.

According to Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press, a source of his that is close to the situation has told him that the Tigers are “closing in” on a deal with former Chicago Cubs pitching coach Chris Bosio.

From the Detroit Free Press:

According to a person with knowledge of the situation, the team is talking with Chris Bosio to join the staff as pitching coach. Bosio recently spent six seasons as pitching coach of the Chicago Cubs.

During his time in Chicago, the Cubs reached three consecutive National League Championship Series and won the 2016 World Series, which snapped a historic drought of 108 seasons.

Under Bosio’s watch, right-hander Jake Arrieta won the NL Cy Young Award in 2015 and lefty Jon Lester and righty Kyle Hendricks finished second and third, respectively, in 2016.

UPDATE:

According to Bob Nightengale, it is a done deal and the Tigers have, in fact, hired Bosio as their next pitching coach.

It was first reported yesterday by The Athletic that Bosio was the lead candidate for the job.
