The National Football League has already levied fines and threatened harsher penalties for coaches and team personnel on sidelines who fail to adhere to the safety protocols put in place – namely, the wearing of a face mask.
And now, the on-field officials are speaking up.
In a strongly worded email to executive Troy Vincent, the NFL Referees Association is asking for harsher penalties for team coaches who don’t wear a face mask.
“We would hope that the League will thoroughly review this situation and make clear that behavior such as this will not be tolerated,” the note said. “Additionally, our officials should be told that going forward, any similar actions by coaches or players in confronting officials at close proximity without a mask, definitely falls under the definition Unsportsmanlike Conduct and is subject to a penalty flag.
“I have attached two articles that have covered this incident and statements by Coach Harbaugh.”
The note is referencing Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, who recently argued a call with an official without wearing the mandated face mask.
