Red Wings make decision on Michael Rasmussen’s immediate future

Many fans so far this season are concerned as to what the Detroit Red Wings will do with Michael Rasmussen. The rookie forward, taken ninth overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, has played nine games of his allowed 10 before burning up a year off his entry-level deal. There’s been no word from the organization as to what they are planning; until now.

Through nine games thus far with the Red Wings, the 6’6″ 221lb center has notched an assist. His first NHL point, it was scored in the Red Wings’ 3-2 shootout loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Additionally, he’s put up two penalty minutes, and seven shots on goal. With a year left on eligibility in juniors, Rasmussen is unable to play with the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins. Meaning now that he’s here, he’s here to stay; at least for the season.

Even though the rookie is still getting acclimated to the NHL game, he shows promise. In 14 WHL playoff games last Spring, Rasmussen notched 33 points, so the scoring touch is there. He just has to put in the work, and he’s shown already that he’s willing to do so.

On This Day: Ted Lindsay makes his NHL debut with the Red Wings in 1944

It was 74 years ago to the day. The Detroit Red Wings had just signed an impressive 19-year old youngster to a contract days beforehand. Little did that scrappy teenager know he’d take, what “future Ted” would reckon, about 700 stitches across his NHL career. That kid would come to be known as “Terrible” Ted Lindsay, making his NHL debut in a 7-1 victory over the Boston Bruins.

Standing at just 5’8″ and roughly 160lbs at the time, one wouldn’t think that Lindsay would become one of the most fierce competitors in the league. Averaging roughly 1.69 penalty minutes per game, he’d finish with a career total 1808 minutes in the penalty box over 1068 NHL games. People came to know Ted Lindsay best for his time on the “Production Line”, alongside fellow Red Wings legends Sid Abel, and the one and only Gordie Howe.
