TBT: Detroit Lions draft Calvin Johnson [Video]

Still holding the NFL record for the longest first round in draft history to this day, the 2007 NFL Draft saw quite the talent be selected, whether it was in the first round or not. The first round would last a total of six hours and eight minutes. It had names such as Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Darrelle Revis, Marshawn Lynch, Reggie Nelson, Joe Thomas and Greg Olsen called within the first round. Another name called, would end up being one of the best draft picks in Detroit Lions history.

Holding the number two overall pick, the Lions would select wide receiver, Calvin Johnson from Georgia Tech, becoming the fourth wide receiver taken by the Lions over the past five years at the time. Projected by many as the the projected number one overall pick, the Lions struck gold with Johnson falling to them. JaMarcus Russell would ultimately be selected number one overall by the Oakland Raiders and go onto be one of the biggest NFL Draft busts in history.

Having quite the career at Georgia Tech, Johnson received All-American honors in 2005 & 2006, won the Biletnikoff Award (America’s top college football receiver) and the Paul Warfield Award (nation’s top collegiate receiver) in 2006, was first-team All-ACC in 2004, 2005 & 2006, and was the ACC Player of the Year in 2006. The accolades spoke for themselves at the college rankings and many saw the transition to the professional side of football being very smooth for Johnson. With a talent level that doesn’t come around very often, Calvin Johnson made his presence known in the NFL.

Earning the nickname ‘Megatron’ along the way, he seemed to be able to do things that nobody else could. The way he shifted his body in mid air to be able to put himself in a better position to make a certain catch was unbelievable. His speed for such a tall guy was extremely impressive and he had one of the best set of hands on a wide receiver that anybody had ever seen. There would be only two of the nine seasons that Johnson played in the NFL were he didn’t eclipse 1,000 receiving yards in a season.

He did however break Hall of Famer, Jerry Rice‘s single-season receiving yards record back in 2012. He would break the record on Monday Night Football against the Atlanta Falcons as he would eclipse the 1,848 mark set by Rice and finish with 1,892 receiving yards at the conclusion of the game. ‘Megatron’ would end up with 1,964 total receiving yards at season’s end. He would finish his career with 11,619 receiving yards, 83 touchdowns and averaged nearly 16 yards per catch.

Calvin Johnson will go down as not only one of the greatest players in Detroit Lions history, but also in NFL history.
