Wings sink Sens in Maclean’s debut

Paul Maclean left his position as one of the Red Wings assistant coaches this summer to pursue his dream of becoming a head coach in the NHL. As fate would have it, he landed the top gig with the Ottawa Senators, the very team the Red Wings would face to open the 2011-12 season. The Senators finished last season dead last in the Northeast division, third worst in the Eastern Conference, and with the 26th best record in the NHL. Clearly, Maclean has a lot of work to do. The Senators are a young group with very little in the way of a supporting cast. There will be a lot of growing pains. Such as the second period the Red Wings treated them to, pouncing for three goals including a two in a span of :58. Golf clap for Ian White tallying his first goal as a Red Wing in his first game, ...

Wings Have Questions Heading Into Season

It has been a long four months since the Boston Bruins hoisted Lord Stanley’s mug that June night in Vancouver. Now, we are mere hours from puck drop on another NHL season, a fresh slate for all 30 teams with aspirations of glory. The Red Wings have been yearly favourites to win it all since the early 90s, and that hasn’t change this season. Sure, some of the familiar faces – Draper, Rafalski, Osgood – may be gone, and some of the key pieces may be getting a little long in the tooth. That’s nothing new for the Wings. We’ve been hearing for years that they are too soft, too old, too European. All I hear is the sound of Hockeytown celebrating championships in 1997 to break the drought, in 1998 for Vladdy, in 2002 with the best NHL squad ever assembled, and in 2008 with a new-look unit. The 2011-2012 Red Wings team ...

What are you looking forward to from the ’11-12 Red Wings?...

Let me start by saying that I hate the summer. Completely, utterly, entirely loathe the stretch of months from the time hockey season ends until, mercifully, the puck drops on the pre-season some time in September. The last few years have been especially difficult with the “early” exits the Wings have made (oh my god we are spoiled as Wings fans). Seeing as it’s been something like 10 days since I’ve updated this thing, and people have actually started to wonder where I disappeared to (sorry gfa5eat), I felt I should offer a hearty “Oops…my bad”. There has been literally nothing going on in the world of the Red Wings that I have felt motivated to write about. Joey Kocur and DMac and Karen Newman were involved in a charity softball game. Yay, cool. Mike Commodore bets on ponies. Sweet. Is it hockey season yet?? Follow me after the break and we’ll talk about ...
