2 time Super Bowl winner Jerry Reese linked as candidate for Lions GM opening

Bob Quinn had his chance to build a winning roster with the Detroit Lions and he failed miserably from the get-go before finally being relieved of his duties following the Lions Thanksgiving debacle vs. the Houston Texans.

Now, Lions ownership is charged with the task of finding the right general manager to lead their team into the future.

According to a report from Jason La Canfora, the Lions are interested in 2-time Super Bowl winner, Jerry Reese.

From CBS Sports:

The Lions are in the early stages of their general manager search, having fired GM Bob Quinn and coach Matt Patricia last week, but they are gathering information on potential candidates and working with a search firm to prepare for interviews. Former Giants Super Bowl-winning general manager Jerry Reese is one potential candidate for the opening, getting strong support from advisors to the Ford family as well as the NFL league office, sources said.

Since 2000, the Lions have employed only general managers who had never done the job before, a fact not lost on the Ford family, with the long-suffering franchise continuing to struggle the past two decades.

Reese, who is 57, served as the New York Giants director of player personnel from 2004-2007 and then as their general manager from 2007-2017. During that time, he won a pair of Super Bowls (XLII and XLVI) before being fired after a 2-10 start in 2017.

Nation, how would you feel about the Lions hiring Reese as their next GM?

  1. Louis Riddick, Chris Spielman, KC asst. GM. My Darkhorse would be someone who used to be here. Brian Xanders! He helped Mayhew Bring in Good Picks to Detroit that Quinn let go! Van Noy,Rieff,Tomlinson,Warford to name a few.

    • Riddick strikes me as someone likely to be rigid. On TV he comes off as a bit stubborn in his opinions and I would wonder about his ability to really work well with a head coach if they saw things differently in some areas. I like someone more like Daniel Jeremiah who seems to have a nonabrasive manner and would likely work well with others. He also is extremely good at evaluating player strengths and weaknesses so I could see his experience there as very valuable. He is young, smart and personable. I hope he gets some interest and consideration.
Love listening to comments by Chris Spielman as he analyzes games. He comes across as very knowledgeable. I could see him in a head coaching role more than as a GM but that is just based on his enthusiasm for the game and knowledge of football skills that comes across in the broadcast. He would be an outstanding defensive coordinator.

    • What picks was he responsible for Ebony? Mayhew didn’t have that many good ones other than 2013. Suh fell into his lap. I will also give him Jahvid Best.
