National signing day for 2018 may have been a couple days ago, but Michigan State got their biggest recruiting news of the week this morning when 4-star cornerback Julian Barnett gave the Spartans his verbal commitment on Twitter.

This announcement came less than 24 hours after Barnett picked up an offer from Ohio State. He also had offers from Notre Dame, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and Georgia among others. That makes this pick-up huge for Michigan State, keeping one of the best in-state players in state and taking him away from the big boys in college football.

Barnett is a 4-star prospect out of Belleville High School in Belleville, Michigan. He is the state’s second-best recruit and the No. 60 player in the nation for 2019, according to 247Sports. He’s also listed as the third-best cornerback recruit in the country behind Akeem Dent, who is committed to Florida State, and Chris Steele, who remains undecided.

This is the Spartan’s third commit for 2019, and ironically enough, all three of their commits are 4-stars from the state of Michigan. The other two are offensive tackle Spencer Brown and quarterback Dwan Mathis.

This is a big pick-up for Michigan State, as Barnett will add even more talent to an already deep secondary that includes freshman Josiah Scott, and incoming 2018 recruit Kalon Gervin, who is also from the state of Michigan.

Barnett has also seen time at wide receiver in high school, and could contribute there if the Spartans need him to. Folks are high on this kid, including sports journalist Jeremy Birmingham, who covers Midwest recruiting and Big Ten sports for The Athletic.

As shown in the tweet above, Barnett has mentioned that teammate Devontae Dobbs will probably be joining him at Michigan State. Dobbs is a 5-star offensive lineman that the Spartans would love to have.

Either way, I think Michigan State is pretty pleased with this recent pick-up of Barnett.
