REPORT: Former QB Dan Orlovsky turned down job with Detroit Lions

For a long time, former Detroit Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky was known simply for running out of the back of the end zone. (Let’s not go further into that as we all remember)

What you may not know is that Orlovsky had an offer to become a coach for the Lions but he turned it down.

That’s right, according to a report by Chris Burke of The Athletic, prior to the 2017 season, Orlovsky was offered a job from then Lions’ head coach Jim Caldwell.

Orlovsky turned the job down, saying he needed a break.

From The Athletic:

“I’d just gotten done playing so I needed the break, and my family needed the break,” Orlovsky said. “I told him, ‘I’m so honored you would think of me but I can’t, nor want to say yes.’”

Now Orlovsky’s name has come up (by some) as a possible candidate to replace Jim Bob Cooter as the Lions’ offensive coordinator though as of Thursday morning, he had not been contacted by Detroit.

The former Lions quarterback has been working as an analyst for ESPN and he has been doing an outstanding job, so is he ready to return to the NFL?

Well, according to Orlovsky, he may be ready to give coaching a chance, given the right opportunity.

“I wouldn’t say no,” he told The Athletic. “Do I see it happening tomorrow? I don’t know. If I get a call from, like, New Mexico State to be their quarterbacks coach, then no. But if I get a call from somewhere (where I have) ties, know those people and can see what the future will be, then maybe.

“Do I think I’d be good at it? Yea, think I’d be very good at it. I’m fortunate enough where I’d be picky, fortunate that I can make sure of the situation and all stuff.”

Nation, what do you think, would you like to see Dan Orlovsky as the Lions next offensive coordinator?
