The Detroit Lions have been battling injuries on both sides of the ball all year. Now, just as their O-line and D-line appeared to be getting healthy the Lions lose a quality starter in their defensive backfield that already lacks depth.

Starting safety Tavon Wilson is the latest Lion to go down and it appears he is out for the season.

Wilson was having a good season (third on the team in tackles), that will, unfortunately, be cut shut due to a season-ending shoulder surgery. This is the third time this year he has had to miss time dealing with his shoulder.

Caldwell talked about his importance to this defense in his press conference today.

From Freep.com

“It’s just like anything else, guys that, regardless of who it is, guys that you lose that you don’t want to lose, but you’re always going to have somebody be able to step up and step in and get it done,” Caldwell said. “But obviously he’s been a vital part of what we do. He’s done a great job for us, so we’ll see what happens.”

The attention at that safety spot will turn to Myles Killebrew. Killebrew has 32 tackles and an interception on the year. This is just his second year in the league and as a rookie, he spent most of his time as a special teamer, albeit an effective special teamer.

Losing a starter in the middle of a playoff hunt that is looking direr by the day is a tough pill to swallow. The Lions defense currently ranks 26th in total defense and 23rd in passing yards a game. Matt Stafford is going to have to work his magic to drag this team to the playoffs.
