Legendary broadcaster Al Michaels has earned plenty of cache over his career to speak his mind, and he implied that he wasn’t exactly thrilled with being “compelled” to wear a face mask during last night’s Sunday Night Football broadcast on NBC.

Sitting alongside Cris Collinsworth while calling the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers game from Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, Michaels appeared to suggest that it wasn’t their choice.
“The officials have compelled us to wear masks during the game,” Michaels said. “And so that is the story.”
“I’m Al Michaels,” he said to Collinsworth. “You are?”
“I don’t know who I am,” Collinsworth replied, shaking his head in visible disapproval.

Face mask usage has been a hot-button topic in the NFL, with the League coming down hard on coaches and teams who fail to adhere to the safety guidelines that have been put in place thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, and has threatened further harsh penalties.
As pointed out in a piece by The San Francisco Chronicle, there are currently requirements in California regarding face mask usage in public:
“The order issued by the California Department of Public Health outlines nearly a dozen situations in which cloth face coverings are required, including when a person is in an indoor public place or line waiting to enter, riding public transportation, and working at many offices and other places.
The order also requires people to wear masks when they are outdoors in public spaces if they are within 6 feet of others who are not members of their household.
Businesses must require face coverings for employees and customers.”
