The Detroit Lions inked tight end Jesse James to a four-year, $22.6 million contract before last season – but 2019 didn’t exactly go how the former Pittsburgh Steeler envisioned.
In fact, he was rather blunt when describing it this afternoon while speaking to media members, describing it as “brutal”:
In 16 games in 2019, he amassed 16 catches for 142 yards – a far cry from his 2018 stats with Pittsburgh of 30 catches for 423 yards.
However, he’s set on beefing his numbers back up in 2020, and was reached out to by offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell about getting more involved:
“As far as both those guys go (James and Hockenson), I just had a conversation with Jesse two days ago or three days ago — it’s my job to help those guys get more involved,” Bevell said. “The good part about the job is I got all these weapons, and that’s also the bad part about the job. You know, there’s only one ball.
“I talked to Jesse about getting Jesse more involved, but all those guys need to be able to have opportunities to touch the ball. Whether the skill guys on the outside, or whether it’s the easiest way of handing it to those running backs.”
