JUST IN: Detroit Tigers add 8 players to 40-man roster

Today the Detroit Tigers announced eight additions to their 40-man roster, before the Rule 5 Draft. After the announcement today the Tigers 40-man roster sits at 39, giving them the opportunity, without having to make subsequent moves, of signing one free agent this offseason. However, most likely that last spot will be used on their of Rule 5 draft pick.

Added to the 40-man were minor leaguers Mike Gerber (OF), Grayson Greiner (C), Gerson Moreno (RHP), Spencer Turnbull (RHP), Eduardo Jimenez (RHP), Gregory Soto (LHP), and Sergio Alacantara (SS). Also, the Tigers signed LHP Ryan Carpenter, who spent the last four years in the Colorado organization.

No doubt the decision of who to protect on the 40-man was a tough decision for GM Al Avila. Most notably left off the 40-man roster are names like Dominic Ficociello (1B), Kody Eaves (INF), Adam Ravenelle (RHP), and Paul Voelker (RHP).

With one spot left the Tigers can use that for their own Rule 5 pick and house that player for a year on the 40-man or they can sign a free agent–though this doesn’t seem to be the route the will go.
