No, the Lions aren’t trading Ameer Abdullah, stop it

There has been a lot of buzz online today around Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah. Website 12up.com published an article titled “REPORT: Lions Looking to Trade RB Ameer Abdullah”  that has been shared around Facebook and beyond many times, with blind faith that the claim is legit – inside the article, they link their “source” Rotoworld, who has also published an article titled “Lions looking to trade Ameer Abdullah?” – Hmm… It seems a lot less sure of itself than the 12up article – let’s dig in a little more, shall we?

The Rotoworld piece is NOTHING more than a summary of an article written by ESPN’s Michael Rothstein, titled “What Lions could get traded during the draft? Start at running back“.

Well, that reads a lot different now, doesn’t it? One is clickbait bullshit – and the other is someone’s opinion about what the Lions should do if they choose to make some moves in the NFL Draft next month.

The ESPN article also talks about moving on from RB Theo Riddick – I expect a full follow-up from 12up saying that Riddick is on the block, momentarily.

Ameer Abdullah is ready for a big year

Detroit Free Press writer Dave Birkett has put out a great piece on Abdullah this afternoon, where he covers all the preparation Abdullah has gone through this offseason in preparation for what he hopes to be his biggest season yet.

“This is the first offseason I’ve actually had to actually train,” Abdullah said. “My previous two offseasons I was recovering from surgery so it’s more of a rehabilitation process as opposed to actually working to get stronger and faster. So that was different.”

Abdullah was able to talk shop with Fournette, Barkley and others about life as an NFL player — former Lions defensive back Johnson Bademosi was among others at the workouts — and he said the training sessions have him ready for what he hopes will be his breakout year.

“Definitely ready for a big year,” Abdullah said. “My body feels as good as it’s felt since I’ve been here, so I think that’s the most important thing. I’ve had an unfortunate streak of two injuries in a row. Coming back from those have been tough in their own respect, but I’m glad I’m all the way back.”

Abdullah has also been doing a lot for the community this offseason. He spent this past Saturday helping teens address Flint water crisis.

“It’s just special to see kids standing on the platform that they have to bring awareness to any cause, specifically today for the Flint water crisis,” Abdullah said. “There’s a lot of lack of education going on with Flint right now. A lot of people may think things have passed, things are better, but a lot of people still need assistance and for these kids to come out and raise awareness for that and take a stand for that, I support it wholeheartedly.”
