It’s not fun being at the bottom of the NHL for the Detroit Red Wings

Sitting at the bottom of the NHL standings isn’t going to be fun for anyone involved. With a 1-6-2 record, the Detroit Red Wings are sit dead last in the NHL’s standings out of 31 teams.

Of course, the Red Wings are in the midst of a rebuild, and there’s going to be trying moments. But the way this season has gone so far for Detroit, any and all bright spots are especially hard to find. Forward Thomas Vanek admitted as much after Tuesday’s practice.

“Do I think we’re this bad right now, as our record is? I don’t think so, I think we do have good players,” Vanek said. “But for us the biggest thing is the consistency — we have a couple good games or couple good periods and then it all of a sudden takes us half a game or longer to find it.

I don’t have the right answer, but I do think we are a better team that what we are showing, for sure, but at the same time, when you play like we did (Monday), it certainly doesn’t prove what I’m saying here.”

It was especially frustrating for the Red Wings Monday night at home against the Carolina Hurricanes, during which they were badly outplayed and earned several jeers from the crowd.

“At the end of the day, you look at it and it was a horrible game and we still had a chance to tie it up,” Vanek said. “That to me is even more disappointing because you are going to have games – we shouldn’t have games like this, especially in the stretch we’re in right now – but as a team you’re going to have games like (Monday), and sometimes you come away with a win. I thought we had a chance to tie it up, and that’s disappointing. It makes it even worse.”

The Red Wings host the Winnipeg Jets at Little Caesars Arena on Friday night.
