Detroit Tigers pitcher Spencer Turnbull threw the 8th no hitter in Detroit Tigers history tonight against the Seattle Mariners, earning nine strikeouts while walking just a pair of batters. It’s the first no-hitter in Tigers history since Justin Verlander did so in May of 2011, just over a decade ago.
“We saw history tonight,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch afterwards. “He enters a very exclusive club.”
For Turnbull, he’d never gone more than seven innings in any of his previous 49 starts in the Majors. He came into last night’s game with 9-25 career record, which included a ghastly 3-17 record in 2019.
He would go on to throw a career high 117 pitches along with 77 strikes and earn nine strikeouts while walking just two Seattle batters.
“He was pretty relentless,” Hinch continued. “I’m really proud of him. He’s worked really hard and deserves every bit of tonight.”
“You could tell he was in command of things. He was generating soft contact on the ground.”
Hinch would also say that Turnbull was fully dialed in the game in the dugout, talking to him constantly.
“He wants to be good, and he wants to be held accountable for things he does well and doesn’t do well,” Hinch said. “He’s very engaged during his games.”
Meanwhile, the Mariners join the Cleveland Indians in having been no-hit twice already this season, and is now just the 5th team since 1900 to be no-hit twice in one month.
