Detroit Tigers have surprise MLB leader in strikeouts

A highlight of the Detroit Tigers in 2019 has been their starting pitching. This comes as a bit of a surprise after the Tigers lost starting pitcher Michael Fulmer to Tommy John surgery before the season began.

One of the pitchers who has stepped up for the Tigers is Matthew Boyd.

Boyd has been on a tear as of late, and currently holds the league lead for strikeouts amongst MLB pitchers. Boyd has punched out 29 batters this season. This puts him one strikeout ahead of former Cy Young recipient and former Detroit Tiger, Max Scherzer, who sits at 28.

Boyd’s 29 strikeouts also put him ahead of Tampa Bay’s Blake Snell and New York Mets starter Jacob DeGrom, who both have 27. Boyd also sits in front of Cincinnati’s Luis Castillo, Houston’s Gerrit Cole, Cleveland’s Trevor Bauer, and Chicago White Sox starter Carlos Rodon.

On top of posting impressive strikeout numbers, Boyd also boasts a 2.60 ERA and a WHIP of 1.15, giving a massive boost to the Tigers rotation. If Boyd can keep these numbers consistent, he could be a possible Cy Young candidate later in the year.
