3 Free agent RBs who would improve the Detroit Lions immediately

When news broke that Kerryon Johnson was being placed on Injured Reserve, the thought by most was that the Detroit Lions would trade for a running back before the trade deadline.

Well, the NFL trade deadline has passed and the Lions did not make a move to solidify their backfield.

As we speak, the Lions running back situation is scary, and that is putting it nicely.

In fact, with Ty Johnson, Tra Carson, and J.D. McKissic carrying the rushing duties, it is safe to say the Lions have arguably the worst backfield situation in the entire NFL.

Because of that, it's crucial that Lions GM Bob Quinn signs a free agent running back before it is too late.

Here are 3 free agent running backs the Quinn should consider.

Jay Ajayi

Jay Ajayi, who is 26-years-old, was in for a workout with the Lions on Friday, so he is clearly on their radar. Though he is coming off an injury, Ajayi has proven in the past that he can be productive if he is in the right situation. In his career, Ajayi is averaging 4.5 yards per carry, which would be just what the doctor ordered for the Lions. Is joining the Lions the right situation? Time will tell.

Alfred Morris

Alfred Morris was just released by the Arizona Cardinals after they traded the Miami Dolphins for Kenyan Drake. It is interesting to note that the Cardinals decided to keep former Lions RB Zach Zenner over Morris but that does not mean the former Redskins RB could not help the Lions. Morris is nearly 31 years old, so he certainly would not be a long-term answer, but the Lions only need him for half a season or so.

Spencer Ware

In his last three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, Spencer Ware has proven he can get the job done if given the chance. In fact, in 38 games (18 starts) with the Chiefs, Ware rushed for 1,570 yards (4.7 ypc) and 11 touchdowns. Ware is about to turn 28, but he still has some gas left in the tank and he could help the Lions out nicely until Kerryon Johnson returns…if he does.
