News just came down that the Tigers designated hitter, Victor Martinez, spent the night in the hospital and is expected to stay another night. According to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News,
Ausmus said on the radio that whatever was ailing Martinez, presumably a virus, was “more scary than a general baseball injury.”
Martinez, who had two hits Thursday, was safe on an error – a play that delivered the Tigers’ third run – in the seventh inning. But he was barely able to get himself to first base. He immediately walked off the field.

Martinez left the game against the Rays Thursday night after reaching on an error, which scored Ian Kinsler, and gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead. However, the news after the game is that the illness was much more serious that first expected.
“He’s not feeling well,” Ausmus said after the game “He got cold sweats, dizzy and his heart was racing. It got to a point where he felt he couldn’t go.”
Martinez will not be in the lineup for the game Friday night against the Rays, recovering in from this virus.
UPDATE: Martinez was placed on the 10-day Disabled List with an irregular heartbeat; John Hicks has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo.
