The Detroit Red Wings inked former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Trevor Daley to a three-year contract with a cap hit of just over $3 million per season this past Saturday at the start of free-agency.

Soon after the deal was finalized, Daley joined TSN’s James Duthie via skype from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to discuss his feelings on his new home and what he feels he can bring to Detroit.

“I got the chance to speak with Kenny and Jeff Blashill a couple days ago and obviously they showed their interest and where they see me playing,” he said. “I’m excited about it, where they see me and where they thought their team was going. At the end of it, it was a pretty easy decision for me to make and wanting to be a Detroit Red Wing.”

When asked where it was that the team saw him playing and what kind of role he’ll play, Daley was quick to point to his veteran presence.

“They see me playing a lot of minutes. Obviously, I’ve been around for a while and you have to earn your minutes,” he explained. “But them showing the interest in my obviously tells me that going in there is going to give me a good opportunity to show what I can do, and it’s up to me to be ready to go in and show them what they thought of me.”
