A storied franchise with a vast array of memorable moments, the Detroit Red Wings keep us busy in the “on this date” department. For this installment, let’s look back to game three of the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals, when Detroit was up against the Carolina Hurricanes.
The series was tied at a game apiece, and when Igor Larionov skated across the face of the goal and buried a backhand shot into the net for the winner in the third overtime session of game three, some had already fallen asleep. It was his second goal of the game.

Detroit proceeded to defeat the Hurricanes in five games, securing the team’s 10th Stanley Cup championship. Larionov played one more season in Detroit after the championship, before finishing his career with the New Jersey Devils the following season.

Larionov, known fittingly as “The Professor”, played in 921 NHL games. He scored a total 169 goals, and 475 assists, for 644 points. He played in Detroit from 1995 until 2003, except for a 26 game span in the 2000-01 season that saw him play for the Florida Panthers.
