If you are familiar with the work of Detroit Free Press writer Carlos Monarrez, you are well aware of the fact that he constantly spews out articles with the sole intention of getting a rise out of people. (Note: I have no problem with this, it is up to his readers to understand what his motivation is.)
Not surprisingly, when Dan Campbell was hired by the Detroit Lions and held his epic introductory presser, Monarrez immediately hopped on his computer to bash Campbell for putting on a show just to appease the masses.
Well, Campbell must have run into Monarrez in a dark ally or something like that because Carlos just dropped an opinion piece in which he apologizes for calling Campbell a fake.
Here are a couple of excerpts from the Detroit Free Press.
I was highly skeptical after Dan Campbell’s first news conference as Detroit Lions head coach. While most people reveled in his “we’re going to bite a kneecap off” viral soundbite, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.
So I thought a lot of Campbell’s news conferences might be schtick. Performance-art podium patter to appease the masses.
Then the Zoom sessions ended and training camp started. I got to see Campbell in person. I got to observe him and listen to him and read his reactions to questions and how he went about his answers.
I’ve come to this conclusion: I owe Campbell an apology.
Because it’s not schtick. It’s not an act. This is who he is.
