Detroit Red Wings to buy out veteran forward Frans Nielsen

The Detroit Red Wings have made the decision to part with forward Frans Nielsen, placing him on waivers for the purposes of a conditional buyout.

He'll count against the cap for $4.25 million in 2021-22 and $500,000 in 2022-23; this will save the team $1 million in cap space, and provide another open roster spot.

In 29 games played last season, Nielsen scored one goal with five assists. He first arrived in the Motor City during the summer of 2016, signing a 6 year, $31.5 million contract given by former general manager Ken Holland to help offset the loss of Pavel Datsyuk. He's seen his production dip in each of his years in Detroit, which saw him tally a total of 48 goals and 76 assists over 319 games.

Prior to his tenure with Detroit, he spent 10 years playing with the New York Islanders.
