It didn’t take long for former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator John Morton to find his next opportunity.
After being fired by the Lions following the 2025 season, Morton has joined the Denver Broncos as a postseason consultant, according to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter. The move places Morton back in a familiar environment as Denver prepares for its playoff matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

Morton’s connection to the Broncos runs deep. Before spending the 2025 season in Detroit, he served as Denver’s pass game coordinator in both 2023 and 2024, working closely with head coach Sean Payton as the team rebuilt its offense.
The Lions hired Morton last offseason to help modernize and diversify their passing game, but the partnership lasted only one year as Detroit chose to move in a different direction after a disappointing offensive finish to the 2025 campaign. Despite the brief tenure, Morton’s reputation around the league remains strong, particularly in quarterback development and route-concept design.
Now, he steps into a short-term but high-stakes role with Denver, assisting Payton’s staff with game-planning, film study, and offensive strategy as the Broncos attempt a postseason run. Consultant roles like this are common in January, allowing experienced coaches to provide fresh perspective and opponent-specific insight without committing to a full-time position.
For Morton, it’s a quick return to a coaching circle that knows and trusts him, and a reminder that even after a short stay in Detroit, his experience and relationships continue to keep him in demand across the NFL.
