Michigan basketball reportedly has its first answer following Dusty May’s shocking departure.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Wolverines are expected to name assistant coach Mike Boynton as the program’s interim head coach after news broke Monday that May is leaving to become the next head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.
The move provides immediate stability for a Michigan program that suddenly found itself without a head coach just months after winning the 2026 national championship.

Familiar Face Takes Charge
Boynton has spent the past two seasons on Michigan’s staff under May and is already familiar with the players, recruits, and day-to-day operations of the program.
Prior to arriving in Ann Arbor, Boynton served as Oklahoma State’s head coach from 2017 to 2024. During that stretch, he compiled a 119-109 record and led the Cowboys to an NCAA Tournament appearance.
He is perhaps best known for recruiting and developing future No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick Cade Cunningham, who has since become a star with the Detroit Pistons.
Important Move for Michigan
The decision to elevate Boynton on an interim basis could prove critical as Michigan works to keep its roster intact during a period of uncertainty.
With transfer portal concerns already looming following May’s departure, having a respected coach already inside the program take over leadership duties may help reassure players and recruits while athletic director Warde Manuel conducts a search for a permanent replacement.
For now, Michigan has a coach in place.
The bigger question is whether Boynton’s role remains temporary or develops into something more permanent in the weeks ahead.
