Detroit Tigers slugger (well, former slugger) Miguel Cabrera isn’t what he used to be. As the Tigers are mired in the midst of a rebuild, his power has all but dried up and is viewed mostly now through the lens of his albatross of a contract – he’s still owed $31 million per season through 2023.

He’s almost certainly not going to be a factor (or even on the team still) when the Tigers are ready to return to their winning ways. But when is that going to be?

“You think about that. When are we going to be a winning team again? But you don’t really know,” he said. “We have to ask the GM and the front office what’s going to be the plan for next year and the year after that. They have a better idea of what’s going to (happen) in the future.”

While the Tigers haven’t enjoyed playing postseason baseball since 2014 and won’t be any time soon, Cabrera maintains a bold expectation – it will be coming back.

“You always have to expect that,” he said. “Be a winning team and be in the playoffs again.”

“When you’re losing, it’s hard to have fun. But we have to understand this process right now. We still have to go out there and have fun and try and win some games.”
