Thanks to finishing the 2019 season with a 3-12-1 record, the Detroit Lions are currently No. 3 on the NFL waiver priority list and they will remain there until the end of Week 3. At that point, the order will be shuffled based on the current standings at that time.
Having the No. 3 priority, means the Lions will have one of the best shots to land players who are cut between now and Saturday.
WHEN?
NFL teams will be making a plethora of cuts as they trim their roster down to 53 players before the 4 p.m. deadline on Saturday. At this time, NFL teams will be able to put in claims for eligible players who were cut. This means the Lions will have the third-best opportunity to claim eligible players who are cut by their current team.
HOW IS THE WAIVER PRIORITY DETERMINED?
Waiver priority is pretty simple. The order to start the season is based on the reverse standings from the previous season, which is why the Lions have the No. 3 priority. This order will adjust following Week 3 and it will be based on the standings at that time.
IS EVERY PLAYER WHO IS CUT AUTOMATICALLY PLACED ON WAIVERS?
No. This is something that is important to remember when discussing claiming players off waivers.
For a player to be placed on waivers, he has to have less than four years of NFL experience. This means that a player like Adrian Peterson, who was released by The Washington Football Team on Friday, is not placed on waivers. Instead, a player with four or more years of NFL experience immediately becomes a free agent and he can be signed by any team.
