Will Brinson: Detroit Lions ‘Losers’ in 2019 NFL Draft

After the Detroit Lions selected tight end T.J. Hockenson in the first round, many fans were not thrilled. Not because Hockenson will not be a good player but because of guys like Ed Oliver and Devin Bush Jr. dropping into their lap and them passing.

Personally, I believe Hockenson will be a very good player and will probably end up making multiple Pro Bowls but that does not automatically mean it was the right pick at the time.

That being said, Bob Quinn has forgotten more about football than any of us know, so all we can do is wait and see how this plays out.

As we know, whenever a draft completes, the media starts releasing their draft grades and we stumbled across one that was pretty harsh when it came to grading the Detroit Lions.

Will Brinson of CBS Sports, rather than giving letter grades, put teams into categories and he has the Lions in the “Losers” group.

Here is how Brinson justified his decision.

Loved this call from Bryant McFadden on our HQ show –, with T.J. Hockenson joining Brandon Pettigrew and Eric Ebron on a list that would not be described as illustrious. Jahlani Tavai out of Hawaii helps as a linebacker (I thought they could have gone Devin Bush in the first round) and I don’t necessarily dislike their picks. But I’m confused as to what their identity is moving forward. Are the Lions going to pound the rock while paying Matthew Stafford massive amounts of money? Are they going to line up three tight ends and try to feed Kerryon Johnson? Even if it all works out they have to do it in a division where the Packers got demonstrably better (Rashan Gary, Darnell Savage in the first round alone) and the Vikings added a center (Garrett Bradbury) who could ignite their running game and Dalvin Cook’s one-cut, zone-running potential. The NFC North is tough and the Lions just didn’t feel like they had the sauce they needed from this draft.

The Lions were one of only four teams/GMs/players Brinson included in the “Losers” category. Joining them were New York Giants GM Dave Gettleman, the Houston Texans, and Cam Newton.

Nation, how do you rank the Lions 2019 NFL Draft?
