Amy Football enters the Big House on Saturday afternoon as the clear underdog against the seventh ranked Michigan Wolverines.
But you can bet they’re aiming to play this game as a toss-up as evidenced by their trip to Oklahoma last season, during which they gave the Sooners fits despite coming out on the losing end in overtime.
This will be the first matchup between the two since 1962. Can Army pull off the unthinkable and get a win in Ann Arbor?
“Michigan will have a much, much easier time convincing them we’re good than I think Oklahoma did,” said Army defensive coordinator John Loose. “We have the ability to be a better team than anybody on our schedule on that day. I mean, you don’t want to play a best-of-seven against Michigan or Oklahoma.”
Currently, every Wolverines scholarship player would play for Army, but not vice versa.
“We don’t have anybody on our team that they offered. Anybody,” said the Black Knights’ sixth-year coach. “Nor will we have in the future. We don’t have the same kind of guys. On paper, we’re not supposed to win.”
The Wolverines are currently favored by 22.5 points and will look to improve their record to 2-0 on the season after last week’s victory over Middle Tennessee State. Meanwhile, Army is also 1-0 after last week’s 14-7 win over Rice.
“I can’t say we’ve always been that way, even during my time,” Quarterback Kelvin Hopkins said. “I feel like the attitude for this team, especially because of that game, it really doesn’t matter who’s on the other side of that field. We give ourselves a chance to not only play with them but to win the game.”
Head coach Jim Harbaugh also knows not to take Army lightly.
“This is something that’s been on our mind for a long time,” said Harbaugh.
Kickoff is at 12 noon.
