Nobody knows exactly when it will happen or exactly how it will happen, but the wheels have been set in motion and it is only a matter of time before our Detroit Lions win a Super Bowl!
As you know, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in Game 7 of the World Series to capture their first championship since 1908. Many baseball fans had been convinced that the Cubs were cursed and that losing was just what was meant to be for that franchise.
The Lions have never won a Super Bowl (they have never even been to one) and have not won a championship since 1957 when they defeated the Cleveland Browns 59-14. Like the Cubs, many fans believe the Detroit Lions are cursed and will never win a Super Bowl. They believe that it’s just not in the cards and that no matter how close they come, the Lions will always find some way to blow it.
With their World Series win, the Cubs have proven that either, 1) curses do not exist or 2) curses can be broken. It’s time for the Lions to follow the Cubs lead and win a championship! It may not be next season or the season after, but it WILL happen.
For the Chicago Cubs, it was the Billy Goat Curse, which all began on Oct. 6, 1945, when the Cubs led our Detroit Tigers 2 games to 1 in the World Series.
From Billygoattavern.com:
The Cubs entered game four of the World Series leading the Detroit Tigers 2 games to 1, and needing to win only two of the next four games played at Wrigley Field. A local Greek, William “Billy Goat” Sianis, owner of the Billy Goat Tavern and a Cubs fan, bought two tickets to Game four. Hoping to bring his team good luck he took his pet goat, Murphy, with him to the game. At the entrance to the park, the Andy Fran ushers stopped Billy Goat from entering saying that no animals are allowed in the park. Billy Goat, frustrated, appealed to the owner of the Cubs, P.K. Wrigley. Wrigley replied, “Let Billy in, but not the goat.” Billy Goat asked, “Why not the goat?” Wrigley answered, “Because the goat stinks.” According to legend, the goat and Billy were upset, so then Billy threw up his arms and exclaimed, “The Cubs ain’t gonna win no more. The Cubs will never win a World Series so long as the goat is not allowed in Wrigley Field.” The Cubs were officially cursed. Subsequently, the Cubs lost game four, and the remaining series getting swept at home and from the World Series. Billy Goat promptly sent a telegram to P.K. Wrigley, stating, “Who stinks now?” For the next twenty years, throughout the remainder of Billy Goat’s life the Cubs would finish each season at 5th place or lower, establishing a pattern that would reverse the Cubs luck and term the team “The Lovable Losers.”
As far as the Detroit Lions go, it’s The Curse of Bobby Layne, which started on Oct. 6th, 1958 when the Lions traded Layne to the Pittsburgh Steelers two games into the season.
From CurseofBobbyLayne.com:
In 1958, after leading the Lions to 3 NFL Championships and providing Detroit nearly decade of Hall of Fame play, the Lions traded Bobby Layne. Bobby was injured during the last championship season and the Lions thought he was through and wanted to get what they could for him. According to Legend, as he was leaving for Pittsburgh Bobby said that Detroit “would not win for 50 years”.
In case you missed it, both of the above curses (if you believe in them) share the same anniversary, October 6th. This has to mean something, right?
Now that the Chicago Cubs have officially broken their curse, it’s time for our Detroit Lions to do the same and win a Super Bowl!
GO LIONS!
The Lions are forever cursed.
