In 2019, the Detroit Lions not only had one of the worst defenses in the NFL, but they had one of the worst defenses in franchise history. If the Lions want to go from worst-to-first (as I have predicted them to do), the defense will have to at least be formidable in 2020.

During the offseason, the Lions hired Cory Undlin away from the Philadelphia Eagles to become their next defensive coordinator and he will be calling the defense this coming season.
On Tuesday, Undlin spoke to reporters via a Zoom meeting and he believes his defense will help the Lions win in 2020.
From MLive:
“Obviously, I have nothing but confidence in this team. This defense is going to help us win — that’s yet to be seen, but from the spring, from my first day in this building, as I got introduced to some of the players and then met them back in training camp, I love this group of men,” Undlin said during a Tuesday Zoom session with reporters. “I wouldn’t want anyone else in this building right now. Obviously, after the roster cuts, you lose some guys; it’s always hard. But I feel really good about the roster that’s been put together, and I wouldn’t want anyone else on this team right now. That obviously could happen very quickly with injuries and stuff like that, that goes on, but I have nothing but the utmost confidence in this group of men.”

Up first for Undlin and his defense will be QB Mitchell Trubisky and the Chicago Bears, who will come to Ford Field this coming Sunday. Trubisky, who is widely considered to be one of the worst starting QBs in the NFL, absolutely shredded the Lions defense in 2019. When asked about that, Undlin said he did not want to focus on the past.
“I would say this — first of all, that can be a two-hour conversation if you wanted to make it that,” Undlin said of Trubisky’s success against the Lions. “I’m not really sure about that. The guy had two really good days against the Lions. What I’m concerned about right now is tomorrow morning’s meetings and putting a solid gameplan together, whatever that may be, so that we can go out and play at the highest level possible and try to help this team win. I’m not really interested in reflecting on the past.”
Nation, do you think Undlin has what it takes to turn around the Lions defense in 2020 or will we see more of the same as we saw a year ago when the Lions went 3-12-1?
