What started as a bizarre sideline moment at Ford Field has now turned into a much more serious situation off the field.
Ryan Kennedy, the Detroit Lions fan involved in Sunday’s heated exchange with Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf, is publicly pushing back against allegations that he used racial or hateful language during the incident.
In a statement released Monday by a Michigan law firm, Kennedy categorically denied using any racial slurs, misogynistic language, or hate-based speech during the Dec. 21 game between the Steelers and the Detroit Lions.
“These allegations are completely false,” the statement read, adding that Kennedy did not use the “N-word,” the “C-word,” or any other hateful language before, during, or after the altercation.

The incident occurred in the second quarter of Pittsburgh’s 29–24 win, when television cameras caught Metcalf arguing with a fan leaning over the railing behind the Steelers’ sideline. The exchange escalated quickly, with Metcalf appearing to grab the fan by the collar before being separated.
Because officials did not witness the incident, no penalty was assessed during the game. However, the moment went viral almost immediately, sparking widespread speculation about what was said and why emotions boiled over so fast.
Kennedy says backlash has escalated
According to the statement from Kennedy’s attorneys, the fallout has gone well beyond football discourse.
The release claims Kennedy has been subjected to harassment, threats, and messages advocating violence since allegations circulated online suggesting he directed a racial slur toward Metcalf and made an inflammatory comment about Metcalf’s mother.
The attorneys emphasized that no video, eyewitness accounts, or contemporaneous reports support those claims.
“Despite reports in the media last night and today,” the statement said, “Mr. Kennedy has not used such language during any interaction with Mr. Metcalf or any other players in the past.”
A complicated history
Adding another layer to the story, ESPN reported that Metcalf previously flagged Kennedy to team security during his time with the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle played road games in Detroit in 2022, 2023, and 2024, and a source confirmed to ESPN that Metcalf had raised concerns about Kennedy during at least one of those visits.
