What Roster Moves Did The Detroit Lions Announce?

In addition to the announcement that Jones Jr. has been released, the Lions also placed RB Mohamed Ibrahim on the Practice Squad/Injured list and signed RB Jermar Jefferson to the practice squad.

Why it Matters

With Marvin Jones Jr. stepping away from football and Mohamed Ibrahim being placed on Practice Squad/Injured, the Lions are down a couple of players. With Ibrahim going down with a dislocated hip, coupled with other running back injuries that the team is dealing with, it is not surprising that the Lions have signed Jermar Jefferson for depth in the backfield.

As far as replacing Jones Jr. goes, the Lions currently have wide receivers Maurice Alexander, Daurice Fountain, and Dylan Drummond on their practice squad. Expect for one of those players to be activated for the Lions’ upcoming Monday Night Football matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

TL;DR (too long didn’t read)

  1. Release of Marvin Jones Jr.: Marvin Jones Jr. announced his decision to step away from the Detroit Lions to attend to personal family matters via Instagram. Shortly after, the Lions made an official announcement that they had released Jones Jr. from their roster, signaling an immediate parting of ways.
  2. Roster Moves: Alongside the release of Jones Jr., the Lions also made two additional roster moves. They placed running back Mohamed Ibrahim on the Practice Squad/Injured list and signed running back Jermar Jefferson to the practice squad, likely in response to a shortage of healthy running backs and Ibrahim’s dislocated hip injury.

Bottom Line: An Evolving Roster

Marvin Jones Jr.’s absence will require the team to make some adjustments in their wide receiver lineup. Additionally, the injury to Mohamed Ibrahim has prompted the signing of Jermar Jefferson to address running back depth concerns. These moves highlight the dynamic and sometimes unpredictable nature of roster management in the NFL and its impact on the team’s upcoming Monday Night Football matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, where one of the practice squad wide receivers may be activated to fill the void left by Jones Jr.
