Detroit Red Wings reduce roster to 25 players

With the closing of the preseason, and the Detroit Red Wings coming away from it with a 7-1-0 record, the time is almost upon them to have a set roster for the start of the regular season.

The Red Wings must have a 23-player roster set by 5:00pm ET Tuesday evening for the start of the season. They took one of their last steps in the direction today. They assigned 6 players in various directions on Monday, including 3 injured reserve moves.

Defenseman Dylan McIlrath and left wing Matt Puempel were assigned to the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. On the injured front, defenseman Mike Green was placed on injured reserve, while defenseman Brian Lashoff and right wing Evgeny Svechnikov were both placed on non-roster injured reserve. Additionally, right wing Lane Zablocki was assigned to the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL.

This means the Red Wings have to reduce their roster by 2 more players before 5:00pm tomorrow evening to be compliant to start the regular season. Their roster currently contains 14 forwards, 9 defensemen and 2 goaltenders. There’s a good chance the last two players cut will end up being defensemen.

The Red Wings open the season on Thursday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Little Caesar’s Arena.

Detroit Red Wings will look much younger come Opening Night

The jokes about the median age of the roster of the Detroit Red Wings may soon come to a screeching halt, if the players waived, sent down, and released are any indicators.

We could see up to five new players make their NHL debuts on Thursday night when the Red Wings take on the Columbus Blue Jackets in the season opener. The defense, thanks to multiple injuries, is a much bigger question mark, but coach Jeff Blashill has stated that forwards Michael Rasmussen and Christoffer Ehn will make their debuts for sure. Defenseman Dennis Cholowski is also slated to dress for the game.
