The Detroit Tigers bullpen has taken a step back as the calendar has flipped to June. In what could be regarded as a turnaround in the month of May, the bullpen bolstered a 3.95 ERA over 84.1 innings pitched. Since the beginning of June, that number has risen to 6.67 in just 27.0 innings pitched — according to Fangraphs. That makes tonight’s starter, Daniel Norris, that much more important. Norris has struggled a bit lately, fighting his control and pitch count. In order to keep the Tigers in a position to claim one victory in this series, it is important that Norris stays within himself and shorten the game for the bullpen which has been used a lot in this series.

And then we have the bats. The Tiger bats have been acceptable, not great, in this series. They have banged out 20 hits in the first two games, but have only scored six runs, which means they are leaving too many men on base. Something has to change in their ability to drive home runs if they plan on contending through the summer.

Roster Move:

Looking Back:

Last night Justin Verlander pitched five innings and threw 108 pitches. The veteran ace of the Tigers staff was done in by long at-bats and foul balls, essentially his inability to put hitters away cost him a decision. The game was back and forth until Warwick Saupold, in a very uncharacteristic night, gave up three earned runs in a game that was deadlocked at 3-3. The Red Sox never looked back, extending their lead to 11-3 and taking the second game of the series.
