When it comes to the best logos in professional sports, the Detroit Tigers‘ Old English ‘D’ is certainly near the top of the list.
But the Tigers did not always have one of the best logos in sports. In fact, from 1927-1928, the Tigers had one of the worst logos in sports history, as noted by Tim Kelly in a list of the “14 Worst Logos in MLB History.”
The Tigers’ primary logo from 1927-28, as seen below, comes in at No. 3 on the list.
It’s hard to see this logo and not laugh.
“It’s hard to see this logo and not laugh. For two seasons, the Tigers’ used a primary logo that looks like something Napoleon Dynamite scribbled in his notebook. This logo is so ridiculous, it borders on being cool. Fortunately, the Tigers’ have largely used their french “D” as their primary logo since 1929.”
EDITOR’S NOTE: The author of the list, Tim Kelly, chose to refer to the Tigers’ current logo as the “French D.” Some readers were unclear and believed that we came up with such an abomination of an attempt to be funny.
