Isaiah Buggs ‘hopes to God’ the Detroit Lions bring him back

The Detroit Lions 2022 season is in the books, and general manager Brad Holmes has admitted that he is very excited about the upcoming free agency period and the 2023 NFL Draft. Holmes will have some important decisions to make during the offseason, and it starts with deciding on which current Lions' players he wants to bring back. DT Isaiah Buggs is one of those players, and Buggs recently made it very clear that he wants to stay in Detroit.

Why it Matters

When it comes to NFL rosters, there is roughly a 30% turnover on a year-to-year basis. Since taking over for the Lions, Holmes has made it a point to keep around the players he believes can help the team in the future.

During a recent interview with Lions writer Tim Twentyman, Buggs said he “hopes to God” that he is back in with Detroit for the 2023 season.

“I don't know what's going to happen, but I hope to God that I'll be back here,” Buggs said after the season of his pending free agency. “All the defensive staff here gave me an opportunity and it was just a blessing to be here.”

Buggs added that the players are buying into the game plan and that it is a blessing to be in a situation where players are unselfish.

“Once you get a group of guys that are all buying in to the game plan and the system and they want to win and want to work and put in the work and time to win that's always a blessing and always a good feeling to be around,” Buggs said.

“And the thing I like about this team is no one is selfish. Everybody buys in and works together. Everybody congratulates one another when they make a big play. There's no selfishness here and that's what I like being around.”

Big Picture

Buggs did an outstanding job for Detroit during the 2022 season, and you can bet Brad Holmes will try to bring him back for at least one more season. It is also a great sign when soon-to-be free agents publicly say how they want to be in Detroit. This is unchartered waters around these parts, but it is great!
