Michigan fans are hoping that the Wolverines’ blowout loss on the road against No. 2 Penn State this past weekend is rock bottom for the team in 2017. Still, it’s fair to question that possibility, at least from an offensive standpoint, something that has been a topic of conversation from day one.
As has become a recurring theme every week, head coach Jim Harbaugh was asked once more if redshirt freshman Brandon Peters is going to see playing time moving forward. But Harbaugh was reluctant to make any drastic changes right now.
“We’re just going along the process of readying him to play,” Harbaugh said. “The backup quarterback always needs to be ready to play.”
“Brandon’s getting backup snaps (in practice),” Harbaugh said. “He’s readying himself to play. He’s one play away right now. Every day he’s readying himself to be out there playing.”
Quarterback John O’Korn has filled in as the starter for the injured Wilton Speight since the Purdue game back on September 23, when he threw his lone touchdown pass of the season. The fifth-year senior and former Houston transfer went 16/28 for 166 yards this past Saturday against the Nittany Lions.
O’Korn did not throw an interception in that game against PSU but did lose a fumble and was sacked seven times. Regardless of who has been under center for Michigan this season, they have had little to no help around them to produce on offense.
Harbaugh did mention that he had plans to plug in Peters late in the game on Saturday, but the fumble loss allowed for Penn State to keep possession and run out the clock. He would now publicly share whether or not he plans to play his former 4-star recruit on Saturday at home against Rutgers (Noon ET on Big Ten Network), and it appears that O’Korn remains the guy moving forward.
“I won’t go into everything, but (O’Korn) managed the game very well. Got everything communicated and ran the offense very well,” Harbaugh said. “There was some duress and some plays we could have made, etc. We’ll go back and look at it. That’s what we’re in the process of doing.
“Some good (some not). That was kind of a theme for our offense.”
“(We’re) getting (Peters) the practice snaps, there’s improvement being made there,” Harbaugh said. “That’s taking place.”
