Lions RB Jamaal Williams makes guarantee for 2023 season

Heading into the 2022 season, most believed that D'Andre Swift would be the leading rusher for the Detroit Lions. But, when Swift was injured, it was Jamaal Williams who stepped in and took over as the starter and to say he did a great job would be a severe understatement. Not only did Williams rush for over 1,000 yards for the first time in his career, but he also broke Barry Sanders‘ single-season record for most touchdowns scored in a season. Now, with Williams set to become an unrestricted free agent, the question is, will he re-sign with Detroit?

Jamaal Williams guarantee Lions

Jamaal Williams makes guarantee for 2023

When Williams signed with the Lions two years ago, he got a 2-year, $6 million deal. But after his outstanding, record-breaking season, he has certainly earned a nice raise. Brad Holmes will have to decide what he believes is a fair offer for Williams, and Williams will have to decide if he wants to test the free agent waters so he can maximize his next contract.

On Wednesday, Stephen A. Smith asked Williams about having to compete with the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North, and Williams was pretty darn confident in his answer. In fact, this sure does sound like a guarantee to me.

“It don't matter,” Williams said. “We taking the North. The change has started. The tide of the season change, it has started.”

Why it Matters for the Detroit Lions

Well, then! That comment from Williams sure does sound like a comment from a guy who thinks he will be with the team again for the 2023 season. Williams has made it very clear on multiple occasions that he wants to re-sign with the Lions, and head coach Dan Campbell has made it clear how much he loves him some Jamaal. At this point, I would be pretty surprised if Williams does not re-sign with Detroit.
