Michigan flips 4-star defensive back Te’Cory Couch from Tennessee

The University of Michigan football program has added their eighth hard commit from the Class of 2019 and it comes in the form of a flip from former Tennessee pledge Te’Cory Couch (Hollywood, FL).

Couch (5-9½, 150 pounds) is rated as 4-star athlete from the Class of 2019, out of Chaminade-Madonna College Prep in south Florida. He’s considered a top-50 high school prospect in the state and a top-30 athlete nationally.

Couch had been committed to the University of Tennessee since June of 2017 just days after the Volunteers formally offered him a scholarship. He was on an official visit to Ann Arbor this weekend and received a big enough impression from the school and program to back off his rather soft commit to Tennessee.

One major school who had seemingly been targeting Couch hard throughout his recruiting trail was Miami-FL. Couch made an unofficial visit to Miami back in January and the Hurricanes offered him a scholarship roughly a month later. He was also in attendance for their “Junior Day” event late last month.

But Couch seemed more than impressed with the day-to-day inner workings at Michigan, along with highly-regarded defensive coordinator Don Brown.

“I just want to see what it’s like there how the players live and stuff like that,” Couch recently told 247Sports analyst Andrew Ivins. “I just want to see what they do on a day-to-day basis and the education. I’m talking a lot with [defensive coordinator Don Brown]. He loves me. He tells me that I’m the No. 1 corner on his board all the time.”

Couch had received a plethora of offers from a number of big-time programs, including other Big Ten schools like Wisconsin and Illinois as well as the Wolverines’ in-state rival Michigan State.

The addition of Te’Cory Couch now gives Michigan a total of eight pledges from the Class of 2019 so far. He is also the fifth defensive player overall and first defensive back in the soon-to-grow crop of recruits for the Wolverines.

And for now, Couch is the first and only Michigan commit from the state of Florida. However, the Wolverines have made living plucking recruits from the Sunshine State since Jim Harbaugh arrived on campus. Of the now 99 commits/signees Harbaugh has landed, 15 of them have hailed from Florida, second-most to only the 19 from here in the mitten.

In terms of overall 2019 recruiting class rankings, Couch’s commit puts Michigan now No. 5 (already tops in the Big Ten) per 247Sports. He’s the first pledge from the junior class of prospects for the Wolverines since Nevada quarterback Cade McNamara made his announcement roughly a month ago.
