Michigan State to wear special retro helmets vs. Indiana [Photo]

When the Michigan State Spartans take the field on Saturday vs. the Indiana Hoosiers, they will be wearing a special retro helmet.

As you can see below, the Spartans will be wearing green helmets with the Block “S” like they used to wear when George Perles was their head coach.

In fact, the reason the Spartans are busting out the Block “S” helmets on Saturday, is to honor Perles, who passed away earlier this year.

From Michigan State:

As a tribute to former head coach George Perles, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 85, Michigan State will wear the “Block S” on its helmets this Saturday against Indiana.

Perles and the Spartans defeated the Hoosiers in 1987 in Spartan Stadium to clinch the Big Ten Championship and a berth in the Rose Bowl. Michigan State had the “Block S” on its helmets during the Perles era (1983-94), which signified a tough, physical brand of football that the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame coach personified in his program.

The former head football coach, athletic director, football player and Board of Trustee member passed away on Jan. 7 at the age of 85 (1934-2020).

Perles, who was inducted into the Michigan State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007, led the Spartan football program from 1983-94 and guided Michigan State to two Big Ten titles (1987 and 1990) and seven bowl appearances in his 12 seasons. Three of his teams finished among the nation’s Top 25, including the 1987 Big Ten Championship team that ranked No. 8 in the final polls following a win over USC in the Rose Bowl. Perles tutored nine first-team All-Americans and 50 of his players were selected in the NFL Draft, including nine first-rounders.

This is a pretty cool gesture by the Spartans.

Rest in Peace, coach Perles.
