NCAA awards Detroit with 2020 Frozen Four; 2021 March Madness

Little Caesars Arena will be the place to be for entertainment in Detroit, and that couldn’t be more true come the Spring of 2020 and 2021.

The NCAA announced on Tuesday that Detroit and Little Caesars Arena will be the host for the 2020 Frozen Four and the 2021 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Michigan State University will be among the hosts for the NCAA Frozen Four in 2020 along with the Detroit Sports Commission. It’s the first time Detroit has been a host in the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Tournament since 2010, when the Frozen Four was played at Ford Field.

Originally it was reported that Detroit would host the 2019 Frozen Four, but instead, KeyBank Arena in Buffalo is hosting that year. College hockey’s premier tournament will take place on April 9 and 11, 2020 right here in Hockeytown.

If college hockey isn’t your thing, Detroit will also be hosting the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. First and second round games will be hosted by the University of Detroit Mercy on March 18 and 20 in the year 2021. This is the second time that LCA has added March Madness games to its events schedule. It was reported back in 2014 and later confirmed that the new venue will also host first weekend games in 2018.

This will be the first time the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament has been played in the city of Detroit since the Final Four was at Ford Field in 2009.

Finally, the Division I Men’s Wrestling Tournament will take place at Little Caesars Arena as well, the NCAA announced. It’ll be the first time that the Detroit area has hosted college wrestling’s biggest stage, since The Palace of Auburn Hills did back in 2007.

Little Caesars Arena, which is described as a “unique blend of existing hockey venues,” is expected to be finished by September of 2017, and will replace Joe Louis Arena and The Palace as the home arena for both the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons. The expected seating capacity for hockey games will be 20,000; while basketball games can accommodate 21,000. The 730+ million dollar project is the centerpiece of a $1.2 billion dollar construction project in downtown Detroit.

With the Red Wings, Pistons, college athletics, and concerts all on the schedule, Little Caesars Arena is expected to be one of the busiest arenas in all of professional sports.
