Key Points

Orchard Lake St. Mary’ has 84-game winning streak snapped

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s was five wins away from equaling the record that was set by Portsmouth (N.H.) High School in 2012.

Following the games, Liggett head coach Dan Cimini spoke to The Detroit News about snapping Orchard Lake St. Mary’s streak.

“Obviously, we were in the thick of things with them for the last few years, in the same league and watching them do what they were doing,” longtime Liggett coach Dan Cimini said. “I told (St. Mary’s coach) Matt Petry yesterday after we won the first game, between games, ‘Listen, I know there’s no words to talk about how you’re feeling right now,’ and he looked at me and said: ‘I don’t know how to feel,’ just because they hadn’t lost in such a long time.

“I told him that what they had done — and I believe this from my heart — that it’s impossible, you know, at the level they play at, and the schedule they have to consistently win 84 games in a row is unheard of. It’s incredible. That’s a lot of pressure, tons of articles and they’re expected to win every time they step on the field. It’s not easy.”

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s amazing streak comes to an end

For anyone who has every played baseball, or follows baseball, you know how impossible it seems to win 84 games in a row at any level. St. Mary’s plays one of the toughest schedules in the MHSAA each year, and to accomplish what they did should be commended. Huge props to any of the players and coaches who were involved in any of those 84 wins. You will never forget what you did. And as far as Liggett goes… HAVE A DAY, BOYS!!!!
