OTD: Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker debut together for Detroit Tigers

It was a match made in baseball heaven!

Two of the greatest players to ever sport the Old English D made their MLB debuts together on this date in 1977: future World Series champions Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell.

“Sweet Lou” was drafted by the Tigers in the 5th round of the 1975 player draft, followed by Trammell in 1976 (along with Jack Morris and Dan Petry).

They both made their MLB debuts together on September 9, 1977 against the Boston Red Sox. Whitaker went 3 for 5 with a double and RBI, while Trammell went 1 for 3 with a run scored. Whitaker would later go on to be named AL Rookie of the Year.

Together, Whitaker and Trammell would go on to play 1,918 games together with the Tigers, racking up 11 All-Star appearances, seven Gold Gloves and seven Silver Slugger Awards.
