Spartans roll against Golden Grizzlies, win 23-point blowout in Detroit

There was plenty made about Tom Izzo and his friendship with Oakland Golden Grizzlies head coach Greg Kampe before this afternoon’s matchup at Little Caesars Arena.

Izzo explained the two always put their friendship on hold when their two teams meet, and Izzo reiterated that his undefeated record against Oakland wouldn’t fool him into thinking it would be an easy game.

However, the latter proved to be true – the Spartans had their way with the Golden Grizzlies, winning by 23 points and simply outmatching their in-state opponent.

In a word, it was dominating. The No. 16 Spartans rolled to a 72-49 blowout win in the Motor City this afternoon, improving their record to 7-3 while Oakland dropped to 5-6. It was the third time this season that the Spartans held their opponent to less than 50 points. They also limited Oakland to a mere 26% shooting from the field.

Aaron Henry put up 10 points, while Xavier Tillman scored nine. For Oakland, Xavier
Hill-Mais put up 10 points.

However, it wasn’t the best of games for Detroit native Cassius Winston as he went just 3-of-13 from the field and 1-for-9 from beyond the arc.
