The Athletic draws up trade that sends DT Dalvin Tomlinson to Lions

The Detroit Lions returned to the .500 mark this past weekend with a dramatic come-from-behind victory over the Atlanta Falcons, and then built upon that by acquiring DE Everson Griffen from the Dallas Cowboys yesterday afternoon.

The NFL Trade Deadline is November 3, leaving plenty of time for more potential deals to be made.

Chris Burke of The Athletic put together a list of potential deals that GM Bob Quinn could consider making, and one of them included the acquisition of more help on the defensive front on top of the Everson deal.

In a proposed deal, Burke suggests Detroit send a 4th round pick in the 2021 Draft to the New York Giants in exchange for DT Dalvin Tomlinson, who is as he puts it, a younger and cheaper version of former Lion Damon “Snacks” Harrison:

“Already, we’re getting into the limitations of Detroit’s draining 2021 draft-pick allotment. When I initially typed up this proposal, I had the Lions sending New York a fifth-rounder. But since the conditional pick involved in Griffen’s trade can land in either Round 5 or 6, Quinn doesn’t have that slot available at the moment.

A four might be more appropriate here anyway. It’s a round above what the Lions paid for Damon Harrison two years ago, but that was a salary dump by the Giants. Tomlinson is younger (26) and cheaper ($640,000 prorated base salary) than Harrison was. The Athletic’s Giants beat writer, Dan Duggan, suggested this week that the price tag might be a Round 3 or 4 choice, but asking for a third is steep. Quinn might even be able to get a sweetener back, as is — say, Tomlinson and a ’21 or ’22 seventh-rounder for that Round 4 slot.

Tomlinson would continue to bulk up Detroit’s D-line depth, on the heels of the Griffen addition. He’s started all 55 of his games as a Giant, and can slot in as a nose tackle, 1-tech or 3-tech, giving a lot more cover to the burgeoning John Penisini-Danny Shelton tandem.”

Originally a 2nd round draft pick of the Giants in 2017 out of Alabama, Tomlinson became New York’s starting nose tackle after the trade of Harrison to the Lions in 2018.
