Three intriguing forward options for Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman to consider

It’s the official start of free-agency this afternoon, and the Detroit Red Wings will be looking to add to their team. GM Steve Yzerman has already indicated that the team will be making moves, though will be “conservative” in their approach.

As a team starved for offensive help, there are a bevy of options that will be available to them. Take a look below at three possibilities that could be considered.

LW Anthony Duclair

The former third round pick of the New York Rangers enjoyed a break out season with the Ottawa Senators last year, scoring 23 goals in 66 games. And it was a bargain, as he only counted $1.65 million against the salary cap.

C Mikael Granlund

The Finnish forward was drafted by the Minnesota Wild, where he played before being traded to the Nashville Predators during the 2018-19 season. He enjoyed his best statistical season the year prior, scoring 21 goals with 46 assists.

C Erik Haula

Splitting time between the Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers, Haula remains among the more intriguing players yet to find a new NHL home. He’s only two seasons removed from a career high 29 goal season with the Vegas Golden Knights and helping them reach the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals.

Detroit Red Wings restricted free agent forward Tyler Bertuzzi officially filed for salary arbitration over the weekend, and now the team knows the official date of his hearing.

When a player files for salary arbitration, both the player and the team will propose a salary for the upcoming season; a neutral arbiter will then make the final call. Following the arbiter’s decision, the team has the right to decline or walk away from the amount awarded. If this occurs, the player can then declare himself an unrestricted free agent.

GM Steve Yzerman has indicated that he doesn’t force any issues getting Bertuzzi (and fellow RFA forward Anthony Mantha) signed to new deals.

“He filed for arbitration – ultimately we know we’ll get a contract done, maybe for one year, maybe for longer. As it stands, we’ll continue to talk,” Yzerman said of Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi just finished a two-year, $2.8 million deal, and will be looking for a raise. Last season, he scored 21 goals with 27 assists in 71 games played prior to the COVID-19 shutdown.
