Wait, what? Detroit Red Wings draft defenseman named ‘Lindstrom’ in 2nd Round of NHL Draft

In 1989, the Detroit Red Wings drafted a defenseman by the name of Nicklas Lidstrom in the 3rd Round of the NHL Draft. Over the next 20 seasons, Lidstrom emerged as one of the best defenders ever to play in the NHL.

Despite being one of the best players in the league (Seven Norris Trophies), it was astounding how many times fans (including Red Wings fans) and even the media referred to Lidstrom as “Lindstrom.”

Ironically, on Saturday, the Red Wings drafted a defenseman with the last name of, you guessed it, LINDSTROM! That’s right, the Wings used their 2nd Round pick to select Gustav Lindstrom out of Sweden.

Lindstrom is a 6-2, 187-pound defenseman who shoots right-handed. Last season, in 48 games in the Swedish Elite League, he scored two goals and had seven assists while accumulating 26 penalty minutes.
